1:52 pm - In NYC this week for MoCCA!
|
|
I'll be showing this Kirby inspired piece + two older pieces at the Panelists show at GRNY on Saturday, as well as the MoCCA comics fest this weekend for the first time ever! This trip is mostly for leisure and mostly came out of a series of happy coincidences so I didn't prepare any new stuff, but I'll be selling Ramble On! and the Game Over/Continue Fake Instruction Manual I made for Stumptown a month ago. Hellen and I will be demoing the game we made again, but only for as long as my Macbook battery lasts (3 hours or so) since apparently at the Armory you literally are not allowed to put a plug into another plug.
"FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - Group Art Show Opening/Book Receptions Panelists V June 6 - June 24, 2009 Reception: Saturday, June 6, 2009 at 6:30 p.m. Giant Robot Gallery 437 East 9th Street Between 1st Ave. & Ave. A, in the East Village New York, New York 10009 (212) 674-GRNY (4769) | grny.net Giant Robot is proud to present the Panelists V art show and as well as a reception for three new comic books at the Giant Robot Gallery in the East Village.
The follow-up to the popular series puts a spotlight on indie-comics creators from across the country, ranging from stapled-and-folded stars of DIY to art-gallery superstars. The show will feature original illustrations, paintings, mixed-media work, and special surprises from an assortment of contributors--including many Eisner and Ignatz Award nominees and winners. This event coincides with the Museum of Comics and Cartoon Art Festival."

3:33 pm - STUMPTOWN POST MORTEM
|
|
Well a week ago today I was in Portland OR for the Stumptown Comics Fest with Hellen and Ryan. It was the best one I've been to yet, making good scrilla and hanging out with friends old and new. I couldn't help but feel like a rockstar after the Guapo reading, and not just 'cause I forced people to listen to my guitar playing-- Jason Martin ( Laterborn ), Vanessa Davis ( Spaniel Rage ) and of course Miss Hellen Jo rocked the mic as well. It was probably the most well-paced of the 3 Guapo readings I've been to the past few years. I didn't win the Maisie (Vanessa did) but I felt honored to be nominated from 40+ zines. Plus I drank my pain away with all the free beer they had that night... dang, Jeremy and Allie of Guapo got HOOKED UP.
Tons of people stopped by and played Hellen and Derek's game. Some even played for 10 minutes plus, despite our disclaimer that the game NEVER ENDED and had NO GOALS! Just goes to show you how important the look and feel are in making videogames! Anyway, if you guys want the fake instruction manual zine we made, just paypal 5 bucks to me @ calvin_w_wong@yahoo.com
Highlights not mentioned above! - Sustainable Sushi Saturday with Erik, Jason, Ryan and Hellen!
- Goofing around in the car on the way to parties!
- Seeing the premiere of host Gariet's OLLIE video at the Laurelhurst about the life and times of Ben Franklin!
- Dunja Yankovic's reading of "Department of Art" at the Multnomah library. She played improvised keyboard music while reading her comic. Bar none the best reading ever.
- Robin Enrico's BUCKET O DONUTS. Peanut Butter and Oreo donut FTW
- Spontaneous INDIE CARTOONIST BAND JAM at Jesse's where the WORST COVER OF ROCK LOBSTER EVER was borne upon the earth. Dunja and Shaye are also amazing drummers, who knew?
- Trading a comic also inspired by Ramble On by David Lasky! Zep rules!
- Angie Wang!
Anyway, there's a full flickr set here. Unfortunately we didn't get time to see the sights as much as we would have liked, mostly restricted to the Lloyd center area and the hectic convention schedule. We didn't even stop by Powell's! How fucked is that. Hellen and I just got confirmation that we will be sharing a table at MoCCA-- for that trip we'll definitely relax more and see the sights! 1:32 pm - Stumptown this Weekend
|
Hey all, if you are in the area please come to the Stumptown Comics Fest at the Lloyd Center Doubletree in Portland, OR April 18-19th. I'm tabling with Hellen, and our friend Ryan Germick (www.ryangermick.com) at table #74, where I will be selling copies of Ramble On! + some older comics, the new Papercutter, Jin and Jam, and you will have a chance to play the game we made for Attract Mode at Giant Robot (http://attractmo.de/blog/game-over-ii-opens-at-grsf-on-032709/). We made a fake instruction manual for the game, chock full of lame retro gaming jokes which we will be selling for a fiver! Also, tomorrow Hellen and I are reading our comics at Guapo Comics and Coffee, and if the flyer is any indication, it will be the BADDEST COMICS PARTY EVER. Oh yeah, and I'm up for the Maisie Kukoc Award for Comics Inspiration. It's too late to vote, but if you did, thanks!

10:21 am - a zine for an audience of one
|
|
My girlfriend got her cell phone stolen a while ago. A lot of our early courting was done via text messages, so I spent the whole day Friday making a 52 page zine with sort of the greatest hits of her texts to me, some funny, some sad (the title is from one of the funny ones). I have a woefully outdated B&W phone (pictured on the cover) which is why I decided on using the sickly pea green paper below. At a capacity of 52 pages, it actually trumps the storage on my phone by +2! See and download the full gallery on posterous Posted via email from calwong's posterous

1:33 am - catching up with things: Whinging, Hattie and Millie sketches
|
|
Tonight was the start of a minor vacation for me, so I spent it watching random youtube clips and drawing in my sketchbook. It felt good to draw again without work hanging over my head like a black cloud. The last drawing is an illustration of one of my favorite lines of dialogue in a movie ever. The other sketches are just stylistic sketches + characters for a new comic I'm working on. I've drawn these characters before but I'm really trying to work out how I want them to look in the next comic. I'm getting there. I wrote a page of notes and a barebones outline too, but in the interests of not spoilering stuff I won't put it up.

2:24 am - Thing a day #9,10 Self Portrait and Song snippet
|
|
9. I made a little self portrait of myself that reminds me a little of Hideo Azuma (read Disappearance Diary, one of the best comics of 2008 in my opinion) for some reason. Pen & Photoshop.
10. Then later with my new Macbook and Garage Band, I recorded this 80s Cure/Smiths/MBV ripoff riff thing with my circa 1960s cheapo Teisco guitar. It was fun, and easy to do! I have too low of an attention span to ever make a whole song though. See and download the full gallery on posterous Posted via email from calwong's posterous

12:46 pm - APE 2008 Mini Report
|
The Best APE was this year's APE. I got lots of great feedback on "Ramble On!", and it was great seeing so many familiar faces again, including those of the great BANG GANG, some dudes travelling from as far as SWITZERLAND just to make it to a dank drafty warehouse in SOMA for a couple of hours. The rain was indeed harsh on Saturday but luckily things cleared up Sunday.
Stuff that ruled:
- touring the offices of Last Gasp on halloween as pigsy and monkey
- getting my grubby mitts on Derek's comics zine "DETH'S HEAD", the Electric Ant zine by Ryan and Evan, and "Empire Park" by Jason Shiga!
- selling out of all 50 copies of "Ramble On!" I brought to the show
- getting a sack of tecates from Alex on Sunday
- having mustered liquid courage from booze and adrenaline from trader joe's chocolate-covered coffee beans, a group of us practically accosted Dan Clowes with Derek's masterpiece(NSFW) and our zines.
- clowes telling Hellen, "Kid, you're going places!" about "Jin and Jam!" whotta capper to the evening
- passing around Evan's iPhone at dinner afterwards and making fun of shitty rob liefeld drawings!
I have since printed more of the "Ramble On!" zine and you can buy it at my site via paypal. Or let me know if you want to trade.
Also, as a guy who had never voted before yesterday, I'm elated about the results of the election-- except for Prop 8.
